taiji quan
Why Learn Taiji quan?
Taiji Quan is a traditional Chinese Martial Art that combines self-defence with physical and mental fitness. The medical benefits include stress relief, relaxation, balance, and juventology. The slow movements impart powerful physical skills and stimulate the flow of energy within the body. The ultimate goal is to improve the mind-body connection and increase vitality and juventology.
The health benefits of Taiji Quan practice are created through Taoism visions of the flowing and formless harmony of nature. It arises from its effect on the brain’s functions, blood, and Qi flow. Traditionally the Taoist lifestyle had a dual significance, personal and cosmological.

Taiji Quan is based on Taoism philosophy
"Tai has the end" & "Ji has the limit"
In the universe are two kinds of energies, Yin and Yang. When those energies are in harmony, the life force flourishes, Taoism embraces this concept in naturalistic philosophy. Taiji represents the universe’s origin, the process of birth, and the evolvement of all things in the universe, the state of chaos before the division of Yin and Yang. The father of Taoism was Lao Zi, the author of Dao De Jing. The natural laws in our days are the laws of physics, evolution, sociology, etc. However, the life principles are the same. Taoism has a holistic somatic approach to life, unlike Western philosophies that assume the mind and body are separate entities.
Taiji Quan translates as the “Supreme Ultimate Force,” meaning an interchange between hard to soft, full to empty, and open to close. The five elements theory of Wuxing (Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, Wood) relates to the five basic stances in Taiji Quan: advance (Metal), retreat (Wood), look towards left (Water), look towards the right (Fire), and central balance (Earth).

the inheritance of shadow boxing
Chen style is the oldest form of Taiji Quan, and all the other styles are derived from it. It classifies into two categories: Old Frame and New Frame. The old frame was created by Chen Wangting, combining the Yin-Yang theory and meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was handed down to Chenjiagou village. The Chen style Taiji in our days includes the old, Cannon, and new routines. The highlights of the style include the internal movement of Yi (mind) and Qi and the external spiral silk-reeling movement.

developing & transferring internal power
If one wants to learn Taiji Quan, one must become calm mentally by adjusting oneself emotionally to settle the breathing within the body. The Taoist appreciation of health development was in pursuit of restoring and rejuvenating bodily strength, mind, and will.
Learning Chen Taiji Quan routines requires holding the head upright, sinking the Qi in the Dantian, turning the waist and spine, moving the upper and lower limbs with ease, and turning the wrists and ankles in a manner conducted by the mind. Some movements are fast when issuing power and changing forms; some are slow during the transitions from movements. Some movements are complex, while others are soft.
