Shaolin monks legacy

the three treasures: movement, health, spirituality

5th or 4th century B.C.

Around the 5th or 4th century B.C., when the Confucianist Lao Zi and many other Chinese philosophers expounded their teachings during the Spring and Autumn Period, Sakyamuni founded Buddhism in IndiaBuddhism advocates asceticism, nonviolence, and renunciation of the world. Buddhists believe that everything has cause and principle, delves into life, introspection on reason, analysis of conception, and provides explanations to myriad things in the universe.

400 years later

Four hundred years later, Buddhism found its way to China and was developed by Bodhidharma, a holy monk from India who settled in Shaolin Temple in Songshan MountainsBa Tuo, who founded Shaolin Temple, came to China from India 30 years before Bodhidharma. Bodhidharma sat facing the wall in a cave for nine years, and his shadow cast deep into the rock face. The 18 routines of Shaolin Quan were developed to release the numbness from sitting meditation. There, Chan Buddhism was born based on the Chinese culture. Chan Buddhism advocates self-cultivation through seated meditation and preaches that everyone has the potential to become a BuddhaThe obstacles in doing so are in the way of life and thinking. Awakening is of primary importance. Therefore the Chan Buddhism school adapted to traditional Chinese psychology. As a result, Shaolin Temple allowed artist monks, tea, wine, and even carnivorous monks, an unusual basis for the existence and development of Shaolin Martial Arts, hence the fighting monks and cudgeling monks.

Northern wei dynasty (386-534)

Shaolin Quan took shape during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). During the 4000 years of Chinese historyChinese society endured multiple wars and dynasty changes. Because of the geographical location, Shaolin Temple became heaven for retired generals and refugees from the law. Before embracing the faith, most of those people were Martial Arts experts. At the Temple, they could exchange martial arts skills, and therefore Shaolin Quan became more mature and refined.

the legacy

The warrior monks gave birth to the concept of martial arts training, so the Shaolin Quan style at the Shaolin Temple became the nucleus that drew the best elements among the Chinese martial arts circles. It specialized in boxing, cudgeling, and internal exercises, with the Shaolin warrior monks taking the leading role.

The mass participation of Shaolin monks in military campaigns marked a turning point in the development of Shaolin Quan, which evolved into a comprehensive system intensely combative in nature which became the leader among Chinese martial arts circles.
