If your purpose is combat, then you must look beyond wing chun training. you will require additional skills such as strength, conditioning, speed, and qi.
You must develop techniques, mind control and intelligence. Don’t fool yourself and loose your ego.
Wing chun for self-defence
If this is your purpose, then forget about rules of the competition. You should then focus to learn additional techniques from Qin Na (grappling), Taiji, Qigong or other Martial Arts styles. Wing Chun is an art of self-preservation. Train with a sense of reality which means repetition of same basics must be done over and over again to build muscle memory. In addition, train with a partner to understand the force, acceleration, and reactions of the strikes and apply them to real world situations.
The principles of Martial Arts include the highest realm of Martial arts. Whether a man's Martial Arts reach a higher level is measured by four aspects: strength, fist and legs positions, strength, and psychology.
For a Kung Fu Master, his force should have the quality of both pliability and hardness; fist position should be hidden; strength should be able to hit people by will and psychology should be prepared to fight, but not act upon anger.
The correct balance between hard and soft means the balance between internal and external forces. Force means Yang and mercy means Yin. There is no pure hard not pure soft. If the fist is too hard, the strength will be exhausted and is the fist is too soft, the strength too weak.

The monks use the above term to explain the high level of martial arts which is neither complicated nor beautiful, but practical.
