wing chun xiao nian tou
a fundamental skill that involves physical, technical & mental training
what is wing chun xiao nian tou?
"Little Thought or Idea"
Xiao Nian Tou (Chinese) or Siu Nim Tao (Cantonese) translates as "Little thought or idea". It is the first form, a thought or idea from which Wing Chun's fundamental system was developed. It can establish a solid foundation for further learning.
The name "Little Thought or idea" has a special meaning which comes from the sentence: "Little thoughts are not right, and lifelong wrong; like martial arts, behave like a person." Little thoughts are like chanting. The basic movements develop the practitioner's strength. The movements of the small thoughts are shaped by thoughts and conformed with thoughts, which can form a mindfulness-awareness. Mindfulness is the origin of Chan practice in Buddhism, a fundamental pathway through which to become aware of the causes and sources of suffering and attain enlightenment or awakening. The four foundations of mindfulness are our bodies, feelings, minds, and the world around us. Training in the foundations of mindfulness is training in seeing reality with more clarity and calmness.

The understanding of xiao nian tou
learning the little thoughts well is equivalent to learning half of Wing Chun.
Xiao Nian Tou is an elementary routine of Wing Chun. Although it does not have many moves (44 steps), it concentrates on the most basic attack and defence moves and techniques of Wing Chun. The movement combination in Xiao Nian Tou lays a solid foundation for the following routines. The little thoughts are fundamental and essential. In Xiao Nian Tou's routine, there is no footwork or legwork. The routine requires the practitioner to be stationary in the Wing Chun stance. Although it looks easy, the small idea contains almost all the attack and defence techniques of Wing Chun and the basic methods of all combination techniques. If one practices Xiao Nian Tou for a long time, one will have already mastered Wing Chun's hand movements.

Xiao Nian Tiao contains many critical practical applications of Wing Chun, such as the centerline, protecting the centerline, and holding the elbows close to the body’s sides for self-defence. All the routine movements strictly follow the centerline principle, with the elbow as the axis.
It is imperative to relax the body when practising the Xiao Nian Tou routine and relax the shoulders. It will help the flow of blood and Qi in the body.
If Xiao nian tou is not right, it will not be right in the end.
"Small Thoughts" means to remind beginners that they should practice boxing with humility and patience and should not have the idea of one step to the sky or quick success. Since Xiao Nian Tou is the foundation of practising Wing Chun, its importance can be affirmed.
Although Xiao Nian Tou may seem simple, it should be noted that Xiao Nian Tou contains many basic Wing Chun techniques. Lay the foundation.
Small thoughts can be divided into three sections, the first section is mainly about the training of skills, the second section is about the method of exerting force, and the third section is about the commonly used basic techniques. Practice must be slow, in addition to vigorous movement, especially the first section is more important, to be slow and uninterrupted, slow but not sluggish. The initial practice is about ten minutes, and the rest can reach about thirty minutes, but it depends on the level of the practitioner and should not be forced.
Xiao Nian Tou's routine main points to consider

xiao nian tou section 1
“Section 1” should be practised slowly. The first section is the most basic of Wing Chun’s adjusting Qi, hand shape, and skill. Changing Qi is slow – it can relax the mind, breathe freely and naturally, and eliminate distracting thoughts. The slow hand shape can make the practitioner more aware of the route travelled by the movement, such as how to walk the path of spreading the hand, how to move the hand, what is the position of the guard when it comes back, whether the elbow is buried when it is pushed out, and whether there is a 90 degree, so on, to know more clearly whether to push out with the elbow. Kung Fu slowness can make one feel whether the muscles and mind have been relaxed, whether the elbows and arms are in a relaxed state every moment, achieve a slow and uninterrupted effect, and give oneself opportunities for self-correction. From a strength point of view, slow practice allows the movement to be thoroughly practised at every moment.
exerting strength
xiao nian tou section 2
Section 2 is about practising exerting strength and releasing strength in the shortest time. In Wing Chun, Chang Qiao exertion, or inch strength. The first section practised the force-generating action under relaxation because the premise of force-generating is relaxation. In boxing theory, practitioners can understand the timing and method of Wing Chun exerting force and how to achieve the effect of saving effort. The second section has different directions and heights of exertion, which is also an exercise to make the body and muscles inertial and more convenient to use.
xiao nian tou section 3
“Section 3” is to learn the basic techniques of Wing Chun. Based on the exercises in Sections 1 and 2, after one has the foundation of relaxation and exertion, one must learn the basic techniques of Wing Chun, such as ploughing hands and upper hands, and so on. These are all essential techniques and the basis for future changes in the techniques of Gui’s hands – the “roots”.
“First in mind, then in the body.”
xiao nian tou practice
When practising Xiao Nian Tou, one must relax the whole body, not only physically but also mentally, so that the mind can be free from distracting thoughts that a state of tranquillity can be achieved.
Xiao Nian Tou is an entry-level kung fu for practising Wing Chun because this boxing contains the basic hand shapes of Wing Chun, such as the spread hand (Tan hand), the arm hand and the Fu hand, which are all preparations for the future practice of Qian Shou.
Therefore, it is generally the first to learn Xiao Nian Tou before learning the sticky hands and finding the bridge. In short, Xiao Nian Tou is the foundation of Wing Chun’s practice and will profoundly impact Kung Fu’s progress in the future. However, Xiao Nian Tou is a set of simple, easy-to-learn fixed-style boxing hands. When one finishes fighting Xiao Nian Tou slowly with the heart, one will also feel a fever in the body. It is the so-called “true Qi” after training.
